Fireworks planned for Gulf Breeze Springfest

The Gulf Breeze City Council on Wednesday will discuss authorization of a fireworks show during the March 24 Springfest event at Shoreline Park.

During the February 5 City Council meeting, the council authorized the expenditure of $15,000 from Tourist Development Council funds for Springfest 2018 with a portion of the expenditure earmarked for for the fireworks show, which will “cap off” the event at 8 p.m.

According to the meeting agenda, based on the positive experience with Pyro Shows from the 2016 Fall Festival, staff contacted the company to see if they would be interested in providing a quote.

The new show was quoted at the same $8,000 price as the 2016 Fall Festival and would run approximately 8-9 minutes and consist of 3,480 shells. The 2016 show was 7-8 minutes in length.

Staff noted that previous shows by Pyro Shows were carried out in a safe and professional manner and that the business also provides the fireworks for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

Other Spring Fest activities will include:  kids bounce houses/climbing wall; car show; live music; skateboard and cornhole contests; farmers’ market; and K9 & bomb squad demos.

Additionally, the event coincides with the Rotary Club of Gulf Breeze’s Gumbo Cook-off.

According to the Rotary website, the cook-off will take place from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and feature samples from more than 20 professional and amateur cooking teams will be available. Other food, including hamburgers and hot dogs will also be available along with beer and wine.

Tickets for the cookoff are $15 and children 10 and under are admitted for free. The event benefits Gulf Breeze Rotary’s college scholarship fund. In 2017 $30,000 was raised for scholarships.
