Santa Rosa County District Schools (SRCDS), in partnership with the Santa Rosa Band of the Lower Muscogee, proudly announces the completion of a groundbreaking K-12 Southeastern Native American curriculum, the first comprehensive program of its kind designed specifically for students across all grade levels.
This innovative curriculum is the result of a collaborative effort among educators, tribal leaders, historians, and community organizations committed to ensuring students gain a deeper understanding of the history, culture, and enduring contributions of Southeastern Native American peoples. Key partners in the project included the University of West Florida and the Pensacola Historic Trust, whose expertise and support helped shape the curriculum’s development.
At the August 6, 2026, Santa Rosa County School Board meeting, members of the curriculum development committee formally presented the completed curriculum to Chief Dan Helms of the Santa Rosa Band of the Lower Muscogee, marking a significant milestone in the partnership and celebrating years of collaboration.
“This curriculum represents a meaningful commitment to preserving and sharing the rich history and cultural heritage of Southeastern Native American communities,” said committee representatives. “Through the partnership with the Santa Rosa Band of the Lower Muscogee and our community stakeholders, students will have access to authentic, locally relevant learning experiences that foster greater understanding and appreciation of the region’s Indigenous peoples.”
The curriculum provides age-appropriate learning opportunities for students from kindergarten through twelfth grade, integrating Native American perspectives, historical narratives, and cultural traditions into classroom instruction. By connecting students with the stories and experiences that helped shape Northwest Florida and the broader Southeast, the program enriches social studies education while strengthening community connections.
