During the September presentation of the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Citizens’ Law Enforcement Academy, Sgt. Roman Jackson explained operations to class members while Officer Clay Smith with K9 Narco provided a demonstration. Training includes obedience, tracking, evidence searches, open area and building searches and narcotics detection. Deploying a K9 unit can significantly lower risks for deputies and increase effectiveness during searches due to a heightened sensitivity to smells in canines.
The CLEA program started in April and runs through December. It is a free service provided by SRSO and covers topics such as self-defense tactics, major crimes and narcotics and includes demonstrations such as SWAT and K9.
