City of Milton moves to make appointment to vacated council seat

With the resignation of Heather Hathaway, the Milton City Council is short one member. As per the City Charter, Council has 60 days to appoint a qualified individual to fill the Ward 1, Seat 1 position for the remainder of the unexpired term.

At the Committee of the Whole meeting on September 22, 2020, Council set forth the following schedule to make the appointment.

  • Deadline to Apply: Tuesday, October 13, 2020, 4 p.m.
  • Review and Discussion: Thursday, October 22, 2020, 5:30 p.m. at theCommittee of the Whole Meeting
  • Appointment: Tuesday, October 27, 2020, 5:30 p.m. at a Special Celled Meeting of the City Council

Completed applications and a current resume must be submitted to the City Clerk by the 4 p.m. deadline. Late submissions will not be accepted.

The City Clerk will review all applications to determine eligibility. Applicants will be given an opportunity to present their qualifications at the October 22, 2020 Committee of the Whole Meeting.

Qualification requirements:

(a) Candidates for the city council shall be electors of the city and shall have resided therein for one year prior to the time of qualifying and throughout the term of office to which they were elected.

(b) The city council shall be the judge of the election and qualification of its members, subject to review by the courts.

(c) After serving three consecutive terms in office for a total of 12 years of continuous service as a city council member, a person otherwise qualified to serve as a member of city council shall be disqualified from seeking re-election to the position of member of city council until such person has experienced a break in service of not less than two years as an elected official, provided, however, that a person otherwise qualified to serve as a member of city council but for having served three consecutive terms in office as member of city council may seek election to the position of mayor for one term before being ineligible to serve as an elected official of the City of Milton for a period of two years. If a person serves as an elected official of the City of Milton for 16 consecutive years, such person, though otherwise qualified to serve as a member of the city council, shall be disqualified from seeking re-election to a municipal office until such person has experienced a break in service of at least two years.
