Santa Rosa County Commissioners on Monday will discuss establishing an ordinance for the placement of automatic Speed Detection Systems in school zones.
No estimated costs nor estimated revenue generated by traffic citations were provided in the backup documentation.
Per the agenda, the purpose of the new county ordinance would be to authorize the use of unmanned speed detection systems in school zones. Such automated systems use radar or LIDAR to detect speeding vehicles and capture images or video of violations of 10 mph or more over posted speed zone limits during school sessions.
If commissioners enact the new ordinance, signage must also be erected to notify the public of the use of the automated speed detection systems.
The Milton City Council on Feb. 9, 2021 voted 5-2 to remove all five of its automated red light cameras after citizen complaints and because significant portions of revenues generated by the traffic citations were going to a third-party vendor and the State.
Other items on Monday’s agenda include:
- A Veteran’s Day proclamation;
- Spending $129,703 for three-year use of Human Resources software;
- Approving $120,000, which was inadvertently omitted from the adopted FY 2026 budget, for scholarships, NWFL Adventure Tourism partnership and utility services;
- Amending the budget to reflect $1.6+ million in unspent grant funding for tree obstruction removal and other improvements at Peter Prince Airport;
- Approving, without board presentations, the selection of Jacobs over two other proposals for professional services related to the Septic-to-Sewer Program as selected by staff and utility providers with staff to negotiate contract (no amount given);
- Approving $378,400 for an engineering task order to Jacobs Engineering Group to update the Milton Interchange Park Wastewater Treatment Plant from 0.25 to 0.50 million gallons per day.
The meeting will start at 8:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 10 at 6495 Caroline Street in Milton. County Commissioners will not have two sets of meetings in November and will not host a rezoning meeting this month.
