It really ended quickly Thursday night when the Gulf Breeze Dolphins routed the Pensacola Tigers, 38-8.
A huge 28-point first quarter tamed Pensacola (0-4), and Gulf Breeze (3-1) is riding a two-game winning streak. A quick midway in the second quarter allowed for a running clock for the remainder of the game.
“We did our job,” quarterback Battle Anderson said. “At the beginning of the game, I started good, but then it declined.”
Anderson had a banner night, going 11-of-15 for 227 yards and three touchdowns. He threw scoring strikes to Joshua Land, Gavin Quenneville, and Kohen Kember around a five-yard, Troy Coughlin rushing touchdown.
“I knew we could dice ‘em with the throw,” Bobby Clayton, head coach. “I thought we’d run the ball better, to be honest with you.”
Coughlin ended with just 62 yards on 15 carries, and the Dolphins rolled up just 98 yards total on 22 carries.
The defense stole the Tigers’ roar – picking up three fumbles — only giving up a late score when the clock was on a continuous roll.
“Our motto is ‘do your job.’ That’s how three turnovers came about,” Shamane Walker, defensive end. “We came out here and out-physicalled them. There was always a gap for one of our players to make a play.”
Next week, the Dolphins travel to Pace to face the Patriots (3-1) in a district dust-up. Last week, the Patriots lost 29-21 to Crestview. That’s the same team that got bounced by Gulf Breeze 24-21 in week two. And, the Dolphins have a five-year unbeaten streak over the Patriots. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
