Last night a 32-year-old Gulf Breeze man was shot in the 1800 block of Justice Circle in the Midway area by a suspect known to the victim.
Victim Stephen Michael Huber, of the 1400 block of Stanford Road in Gulf Breeze, flagged down police, stating he had been shot by a white male who fled the scene in a white 2011 Volkswagen van.
Authorities have not released the name of the suspect, whom the victim reported to be a convicted felon.
The incident report states the victim does not know the suspect’s real name, only a nickname, which was redacted from the report.
Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Sgt. Rich Aloy reports there is an active investigation underway.
Deputies were called to the scene around 1:40 a.m. and arrived about six minutes later.
The responding officer observed on injury to Huber’s left side which “appeared to be an entry and exit wound from a projectile.”
Huber told police the suspect had stolen some tools valued approximately $275 from his residence and given him a ride to the scene of the shooting to retrieve the items. He reported that when they arrived at the scene he was told the stolen tools were “in the woods” behind a vacant lot.
Huber told cops he then went with walking with the suspect through the vacant lot to obtain the tools but “felt like there was something wrong.”
As the victim was walking, the suspect allegedly fired a single shot in his direction with a brown rifle but missed.
Huber said he turned to and yelled, “Oh, it’s going to be like that?” before walking to the roadway.
Another shot was fired, striking the victim, who called then police.
Prior to being transported to the hospital, cops observed Stephen to be in the possession of black gloves. When asked what the gloves were for the victim replied he was either going to get his money or tools, else he planned to “slap box” the suspect.
