Howard Steele, a familiar face in Santa Rosa County with a vested interest in our community’s future, is running for Milton mayor, challenging incumbent Heather Lindsay, who is seeking a third term.
A United States Marine Corps veteran, Steele was born and raised in Santa Rosa County and is a 1987 graduate of Milton High School. He also attended the University of West Florida and has deep family and community ties to the area. Today, he is a self-employed small business owner, father of four and grandfather of four.
Steele served in the Marine Corps during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm, including service in Saudi Arabia with the 2nd Marine Division, SRI Group. He says his military experience helped shape his commitment to freedom, teamwork and public service.
A recent announcement by Mayor Lindsay regarding the cancellation of community events, including Milton’s beloved Christmas Parade, prompted Steele to speak out about the importance of preserving local traditions and finding solutions through cooperation.
“People need our heart-filled traditions, especially after a disaster,” Steele said. He added that he hopes community leaders can work together to find a way for the community to continue enjoying events that bring residents together.
Steele describes himself as a registered Republican, a patriot and a Constitutionalist. He says his approach to leadership would emphasize collaboration and positive working relationships with other government agencies and neighboring communities.
“I fought for FREEDOM and believe that EVERYONE deserves a voice. I believe a TEAM approach and maintaining POSITIVE relationships with other government agencies and neighboring communities is vital to our STRENGTH,” Steele said.
Among his stated priorities are maintaining a fiscally conservative approach to city government, keeping taxes low and protecting the area’s natural resources as Santa Rosa County continues to experience growth.
He also wants to strengthen the local economy by encouraging a diverse range of industries while creating opportunities for small businesses to grow and succeed.
As a current member of the county’s Planning and Zoning Board, Steele has experience participating in discussions involving development and land-use issues — matters that will continue to be important as Milton and the surrounding county grow.
Steele says his connection to the community is personal, with four children and three grandchildren also calling Santa Rosa County home.
“I love Milton and will fight for our community,” Steele said.
