Navarre Incorporation Advocate Jailed for Attempted Murder Homicide Count

11:30 AM UPDATE: Per SRSO, there is not a mistake in their Jail View post, which lists the charge as a 782.04.2 homicide count. Per Huston’s arrest report, he is charged with a violation of Florida State Statute 782.04.2 “Murder in the second degree (Attempted).”  Second-degree attempted murder is a first-degree felony charge.

Joshua Richard Huston, 47, was booked into Santa Rosa County Jail last night on a first-degree felony count of homicide, following a November 7 shooting in Navarre. However, the victim has not expired, so Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jillian Durkin says she expects the charge to be changed to “attempted” murder and that she will release a redacted version of the arrest report shortly. 

Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office yesterday issued a press release, stating deputies were investigation a shooting which had taken place around 4 a.m. in the 2000 block of Pine Ranch Drive in Navarre. **Per SRSO the shooting took place around 2 a.m.; SRSO says the report was written at 4 a.m.**

Per Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, Huston resides in the 2000 block Pine Ranch Drive and was booked at 11;36 p.m. Jail records show that Huston is facing a charge of murder dangerous depraved without premeditation as per Florida State Statutes 782.04.2. 

Santa Rosa County Property Appraiser records show Huston and his wife, Tiffany, own a residential property and an adjacent vacant adjacent property in the 2000 block of Pine Rance Drive.

SRSO Public Information Officer Jillian Durkin in the release stated deputies responded to the home regarding the reported shooting and contacted the homeowner who had reportedly fired the weapon.

“After receiving information that a person involved had been shot and left the area, we utilized our Bloodhound Unit and successfully located the person,” stated the release, which at the time reported the individual had sustained non-life-threatening injuries and had been transported to receive medical treatment. “This is currently an active and ongoing investigation,” added the release.

Huston has not yet been issued a bond.

SRSO issued the following update this morning: 

Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Detectives have made an arrest after investigating a shooting that occurred on 11/7/2022 at approximately 2:00 am in Navarre. Our deputies responded to 2075 Pine Ranch Dr regarding the reported shooting and encountered the lot owner, Joshua Huston; 47 years old. Upon further investigation it was determined that Huston had fired the weapon at an individual who was trespassing in the undeveloped lot. The wounded victim had left the area and was later located by our Bloodhound Unit, where he was identified as Jermiah Hamilton, 44 years old. Hamilton was transported to receive medial treatment for his injuries.

After further investigation and consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, it was determined that Stand Your Ground did not apply, and a warrant was requested for Joshua Huston for Attempted Murder, First-degree Felony.

Huston is currently being held without bond in the Santa Rosa County Jail, pending first appearance.
