Registration is underway for the 2nd annual Hunger Heroes 5K, which will take place March 7 on Navarre Beach. Sponsorships are also available for the event, which benefits Outreach Navarre.

Outreach Navarre is a non-profit organization which provides four innovative programs, including the Navarre Weekend Food Program, at Navarre’s six public schools.

“Our goal is for the Hunger Heroes 5K to be the most family friendly fun run on the Panhandle,” said Michelle Abrams, Outreach Navarre co-founder.  “Our programs are growing, and this 5K is designed to engage the members our community who want to help.  Everyone is a superhero when they step up to help advocate for a student, and we welcome local businesses, organizations and individuals to join us in making the difference in the life of a student.”

Abrams said when the organization was started in 2015 organizers didn’t envision it would expand beyond providing weekend food for students in need.

“Today we are excited to impact not only the 470 students in our Weekend Food Program but also the countless students impacted by our snack program and the 6th graders at Holley Navarre Middle and seniors at Navarre High School experiencing our personal finance curriculum,” she said.

According to Abrams, more than 1,200 students benefit from the programs, but the financial curriculum is a mission she describes as her true calling.

“I realized that if we could help educate this generation of students in money management, we might be able to assist every student to begin with a firm foundation of money management which is a building block to each of our lives.  The Foundations of Personal Finance program teaches students basic financial skills like setting a budget, balancing a checkbook, and creating good money habits like saving,” said Abrams. “The high school program grows from the basics and assists students in realizing the impact marketing and money have on relationships and on their futures.”

Like the Outreach Navarre organization, the Hunger Heroes 5K event is 100 percent staffed by volunteers, and all proceeds from the event will go towards Outreach Navarre’s operating budget.
