Santa Rosa County School Superintendent Tim Wyrosdick this morning confirmed that only 28 teachers have been laid off after 2,000 students elected for home school during the 2020-2021 school year, which started today for teachers.
According to Wyrosdick, the district had only only 1,200 home schooled students during the 2019-2020 school year.
Initial reports suggested the decline in students might result in 83 teacher layoffs, but Wyrosdick said 55 were able to be placed in other jobs or declined an offered position.
Families had four options for students during the upcoming school year: a traditional classroom setting, virtual learning through the state, remote learning through Santa Rosa County School district or homeschooling.
Recently the district announced that more than 80 percent of students were expected to return to classrooms August 24.
