Should Party Affiliation Matter in Non-Partisan School Board Races?

District 5 School Board Candidate Marie Locklin was a member of the Democratic Party for nearly 20 years. Should that matter?

School board races are non partisan, and that explains how some Santa Rosa County voters unknowingly elected a Democrat to serve on the board. Do you believe voters should know the party affiliation history of candidates?

The supermajority of voters in Santa Rosa County are registered Republicans, so I strongly suspect that if voters had known Elizabeth Hewey’s background, many would have supported a different candidate.

So when it comes to the current District 5 School Board race, some voters might want to consider the party affiliation history of candidate Marie Locklin, who began her teaching career in Maracaibo, Venezuela.

Santa Rosa County Supervisor of Elections records show Locklin first registered to vote in Santa Rosa County as a Democrat on Sept., 27, 1996, and she remained a Democrat for roughly two decades while becoming heavily involved in the local teacher’s union, Santa Rosa Professional Educators.

For nearly 20 years Locklin remained a member of the Democratic Party. U.S. President Bill Clinton was President when she first registered and Barack Obama was President when she switched her affiliation to the Republican on February 2, 2016, per the Supervisor of Elections office.

Locklin’s party record and union involvement is just food for thought ahead of Tuesday, Nov. 3.
