VIEWPOINT: Stick with the legislature’s 2023 lawsuit reforms

Posted on September 24, 2024 by GUEST OPINION

Americans are addicted to lawsuits. Current litigation trends prove it – the moment the severity of COVID-19 became clear, trial lawyers began running late-night TV ads scouting for clients for Coronavirus-related lawsuits. As soon as a hurricane comes round, lawyers go into action again.

In 2023, the legislature passed significant litigation reform because lawsuits in Florida were driving insurance companies out of business and were about to shipwreck our economy permanently.  For most small businesses, this has been of great benefit because they are beginning to be able to breathe again.  We still have a long way to go, but it is getting much better.

Now we need to be patient and let these reforms work so that prices of goods and services can better reflect this break in litigation costs. Next, we will hopefully see even more competition in the insurance market so that homeowners can get a break there too.  The one way we won’t get a break is if we go back on those reforms and undo all the good that was done.  Be patient, and let’s keep our economy strong.
