The Navarre Weekend Food Program is raising funds to provide the 447 students in the program with a hygiene kit to start off the New Year.

To ensure all students receive the same items, the organization is accepting monetary donations at Navarre Auto Repair or through www.weekendfoodprogram.org.

“We are trying to raise $1,500 for this effort, and to date $600 has been raised by generous local individuals,” stated Michelle Abrams, president of the organization.

The Weekend Food Program of Navarre provides food to send home with 447 local students on a weekly basis. The students are qualified by the school through the Free and Reduced Lunch program and then sign up for the additional assistance.

“Each year there are success stories from families who had gone through a hard time and with our help and with the help of others are able to get back on their feet. It’s fantastic to know we are making the difference in the lives of our students, their families and of our neighbors,” said Abrams.

Additionally, for #GivingTuesday, on November 28, the organization is raising funds for #SnacksforOurStudents to provide snacks for program students during daily snack time at the six schools it serves. Abrams said the organization is aiming to raise $4,500 to cover those costs through the end of the 2017-2018 school year.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The organization is not accepting donated items because those can be easily tampered with and can pose issues with sizes, storage, sorting, etc. However, monetary donations toward the cause are very appreciated.
