The Florida Department of Environmental Preoction is issuing fines related to a sewage contamination incident which started a nightmare for some residents around Soundside Drive in Midway.
Brown Construction must pay a $2,045,846 fine, per a news report from WEAR ABC 3.
That report goes on to say the City of Gulf Breeze has the option to pay a $1,000,000 fine or complete a project in these categories:
- environmental enhancement;
- environmental restoration;
- capital or facility improvement; or
- donation of environmentally-sensitive land.
If a project is chosen in lieu of paying the fine, that project must be approved by FDEP and valued at 1.5 times the fine amount.
Likewise, Midway Water System has a similar choice to pay a $220,000 fine or complete a project in the aforementioned categories at 1.5 times the fine amount.
Additionally, Midway Water System must pay $5,000 in expenses incurred for the FDEP investigation.
