Man ingests fatal dosage of Cocaine during traffic stop

An adult male was stopped last night around 10:30 p.m. for a traffic related incident in Milton. During the traffic stop, the Deputy observed the adult individual quickly placing something in his mouth. The Deputy was unable to determine what the item was. The individual was arrested based on a suspended driver’s license and the location of a controlled substance in the vehicle.

Upon arrival to the jail, the individual was referred to medical due to an unidentified item possibly being ingested. After being booked into jail, the man was placed in a “Close Watch” area where monitoring consistently takes place.

During a routine close watch monitoring at 5:45 a.m., the individual openly admitted to consuming seven grams of cocaine during the traffic stop and advised he was not feeling well.

EMS was contacted by medical staff for transport to a local area hospital. The male left the facility by ambulance. We were later informed the individual was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

At this time, a full death investigation is underway by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Division. This remains an active investigation.

The name of the individual will be released after next of kin notification.
